The company started in 1858 when the first T & G Allan store was set up on Collingwood Street in Newcastle by local brothers Thomas and George Allan. The store was initially a newsagent, stationery shop and bookseller but before long new departments including gifts, pens and greeting cards were introduced and new stores were opened.

As new generations of the Allan family emerged and took over the running of the company, the business expanded. The company first opened The Pen Shop in Newcastle in 1946 and this was the first specialist writing instrument shop in the UK, but it wasn’t until 1987 that a design concept was developed that would enable The Pen Shop to become Europe’s largest writing instrument specialist.

Today the company has 19 branches of The Pen Shop across the UK as well as a T&G Allan store in Morpeth.
